Welcome

Welcome to the British Comics Institute. We are here to encourage the development of the British Comics Industry. The first British comic appeared over 180 years ago and the industry still survives to this day. We hope to inspire generations to come and keep the industry alive for many years to come.

Please browse our website, and we hope you will find something of interest that will keep you coming back for more!

THE GIFFORD COLLECTION

It was Denis Gifford who first envisioned a British Comics Institute. He'd dreamed that he would be the curator, but he sadly passed away in 2000. He will never be forgotten though, and his works are invaluable resources to fans of British comics. He'd dreamed that when he died his comics would be put up in a museum somewhere and called The Gifford Collection. Sadly, it didn't happen, and his collection was auctioned off to the four corners of the globe, and will never be seen in one place again. It would be impossible to collect all of his comics again, but we will be listing a full reference of his works on British comics here, and building a collection in his name.

THE WILLIAM HEATH AWARD

William Heath was the man responsible for the Glasgow Looking Glass and also drew it as well. Since the Glasgow Looking Glass is considered to be the world's first comic, William Heath should be considered the father of comics, and here we do - so created the William Heath Award in his honour.

The award will be given annually for:

  • Best Comic
  • Best Comic Strip
  • Best Cartoonist

The awards will be given out each November.
